My 30 day challenge

April 1, 2008 at 10:50 am 25 comments

Before I got married, I decided I needed to do something about the freshmen 15 (errr 50lbs) that I gained in college but still hadn’t been able to lose. Like every bride I wanted to fit into the size 4 Vera Wang dress by my wedding day. But alas I am not a size 4 and a Vera Wang was not in the budget. Even though I couldn’t do anything about the Vera Wang, something could be done about my weight.

I knew that a decade of eating fast food and lack of exercise was gonna take me more than a day to overcome. So I got real, chucked the 1/2 eaten cupcake in my hand and signed up for the gym. I even got a personal trainer to keep me accountable.

before and after

For the next ten months, I worked out 4-5x a week, switched to diet coke, food journaled and lost 20lbs. It wasn’t my goal of 30lbs but you can bet I was proud and rock my wedding dress! I think working out on a regular basis is key but the biggest thing that I think worked for me was writing down everything I ate in a food journal. It was one of the tricks that my trainer taught me. I have a little magnetic dry erase board on my frig so that I could not claim laziness to write things down. I would write everything – even the bad stuff.

Now that I’ve been happily married for the last 7 months and delving into the world of food blogs and baking challenges to replace my previous wedding planning fervor, I admit that my dry erase board hasn’t seen much action these days and my weight is creeping back up. Slowly but surely… Richard the Trainer is not happy with me.

Its time to start off the new month on the right track. Today starts my 30 day challenge. Back to the basics: food journaling, exercise, counting calories, portions, Wednesday weigh-ins.

No fooling.

T-minus 3 months and 4 days until I have to fit into a bridesmaid dress.

Entry filed under: foodjournal.

RACHEL, ::getting down with my bad self::

KAT, that would be awesome! What are some exercises I can do at home? A big de-motivation for me is getting myself to the gym sometimes. I need some simple effective routines I can do at home, between watching TV, interneting etc. oohhh and healthy snacks recs too. Whats better if I only have 10-20 minutes? cardio or weights?

NINA, I am trying! I only have 3 months and I don’t wanna be the fat BM! haha

JEN, kudos to you too! You know I’ll totally be your buddy. I will be writing in my blog so if you wanna write in your blog with me feel free! We’ll encourage each other :)

Way to go CB! I am a fellow sister in the weight loss war. About 5 years ago I was 80lbs heavier than I am today, and you’ve already discovered the secrets…working out, portions, food journaling, and just getting more active in general! Do you like workout videos? I will do crunches, squats, lunges, pushups, shoulder presses and other moves that don’t require gym equipment, other than dumbells or bands, while watching tv.

Maybe you can do some experimenting with low-fat or low-sugar cuppycakes (I know, I know they mostly turn out like rubber, but if you use 50% fruit puree and 50% oil to replace the oil in the recipe you can cut down on fat and calories by quite a bit).

Don’t forget to take before/during/after pictures of yourself so you can see all the great progress. Take tape measurements too…sometimes when you don’t see the number on the scale moving you are still losing inches!

    Keep up the great work!!

Well if a happy marriage makes you fat, what does a happy marriage and 3 kids in 5 years make you… dont ask. I need to jump on the weight loss bandwagon, badly. Im already doing straight water for my drink consumption. I lack enough exercise. Living in a hilly area makes it hard to push a double stroller, and no time for a gym when your a Mom to 3 kids 24/7. bleh.

    Proud of you CB!

SLUSH, uh.. I’d call that… busy? haha. Maybe this is another reason why I do not want children. I am way too selfish to devote all my time and energy to a mini CB. I need some gym time, internet time, T time etc etc. You’re a supermom.

Some of my favorites are the Billy Blanks Tae Bo DVDs, Denise Austin’s personal training system, and anything by Cathe Friedrich – her DVDs are pretty expensive, but they are way worth it, she’s gives a hardcore workout (not a good choice if you are a beginner.) You might want to check out some workout DVD previews at http://www.collagevideo.com, they give a short preview of all kinds of workout DVDs which has saved me a lot of money!
