What was the WORST Christmas food related gift you’ve ever received?

This happened about 6 Christmases ago.

My ex-SIL (you can already tell there’s some bad history from her prefix) was the QUEEN of gifts. She had that creative flair that made every gift perfectly wrapped with bows and matching To and From tags. You know those types right? *cough April cough* I kid you not. Ex-SIL was the Debbie Homemaker of gifts. I would try to aspire to wrap gifts like her but I am WAY too lazy to make a bow look that perky.

So imagine my surprise when the last Christmas that she was part of our family, Hubs and I received our gift as an unwrapped box of Sees candy. Now we’re not gift greedy or anything. I’m all about the food and candy gifts for Christmas being a foodie myself but this gift was so uncharacteristic of her. That’s what made it so surprising. But wait there’s more…

Upon opening the box of Sees candy, we realized right away that it was a regift. How did we know… you ask?

Candy had mold. It was straight up fuzzy.

It’s not right what she did to that chocolate. Damn shame.

Foodie Question of the Day

What food are you willing to splurge on no matter how bad the economy gets?

(A) Meat, poultry, seafood
(B) Coffee
(C) Cheese
(D) Wine, alcohol
(E) Chocolate (dessert)
(F) Organic foods
(G) Other

I think I’ll have to go with (A) seafood. I pink puffy heart shrimp.

You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There’s pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That… that’s about it.

Bubba Gump knew his shrimp.

But cheese would be a close second.

Foodie Question of the Day

How do you defrost beef, chicken and/or seafood?

(1) If I plan ahead far enough I will defrost in my frig overnight. (Rarely happens b/c I am Miss Dinner Procrastinator.)

(2) If I have a few hours I’ll defrost in a bowl with some cold water. (Usually if I remember at work I’ll call my husband to do it for me.)

(3) If I am in a big hurry I’ll microwave-defrost. (I prefer this method only as a last resort b/c meat always ends up with a weird taste. Maybe it’s just my microwave? *shrugs)

PS. Funny story. I accidentally got tongue-tied and told my coworker “Happy Hump The Earth Day”. Obviously my brain couldn’t decide between “Happy Hump Day” and “Happy Earth Day”. Doh! *smacks head*

Foodie Question of the Day

What dish are you TERRIFIED to tackle? (baked good, bread, main dish etc)

I’d say I am more scurred than terrified of something that’s been on my must-bake list for a LONG time. Bakerella’s Cupcake Pops.

Clara, why scurred? You LOVE cupcakes!

I have no idea! Maybe because I think Bakerella has already set such a high standard (she was on Martha Stewart for goshsakes!) that I just want to stare at my computer in awe and not even try. But since admitting to her via twitter (@bakerella) my cupcake pop fears, I promised I’d put my big girl apron on and try soon. Very soon. (And I have to send her pictures. Eek!)

Maybe this weekend?

But no promises. I’m a wuss.

Foodie Question of the Day

What food do you dislike but still prepare/cook/bake for someone you love?

I think most readers know by now that I do not eat bananas.

The soft smushy texture makes me gag. I don’t really like the smell of them either. I think it stems from a childhood memory. I was sick. Not just *cough cough* sick but flu sick and my mom gave me a banana to eat. FYI banana flavored puke is not a good thing. Just saying…

Kinda ironic that I like banana+strawberry smoothies but I think you gotta mix it with other things so it’s not “just” banana flavor. If banana is the star of the show, I probably aint gonna eat it! *pushing the banana cream pie away*

But my bunnies adore bananas so I’ll pinch my nose while unpeeling a banana (I am so talented, no?) for my bunnies. Is that love or what? I won’t even do that for my husband. HAHA

Oh yeah… I don’t do beans either. No side order of beans and rice for me. Just give me my cheese enchiladas with an extra scoop of guacamole and I’m good!

Foodie Question of the Day

Do you eat off other people’s plates?

Warning: flameworthy.

I dumped a guy b/c he use to get uppity about my “eating off his plate” habit. Sorry, but boyfriend chastising me is dump worthy. I guess I didn’t see the issue if we’ve exchanged spit before to eat off his plate you know?

I suppose it really depends on the person I am eating out with. Husband? Of course! Family? Yes. Friends? Yes. Acquaintances? Probably not. Business/work related? No.

I have an indecisive personality so when I eat out there are so many choices available that I never really know what I want to order. Then I feel pressured when the waitress is staring at me and usually pick too fast and not think of all the options. Of course when I do make a choice and see what someone else ordered, it always looks better than what I ordered.

The whole sharing concept gives me the ability to try a little of everything so ppl eating off my plate and vice versa is no biggie for me. Unless… you eat more of my food than yours. That’s when I have issues. Also a little warning, “Clara, I am coming in for a onion ring, cool?” is always nice.

PS. There’s no Indian giving either b/c that french fry I just hijacked is loooooong gone by now…

Foodie Question of the Day

Do you use a feed reader? (ie Google Reader, Bloglines etc)

If yes, what makes you add one blog and not another?
If no, why not?

I use google reader. Its a foodie blogger’s best friend. Seriously.

I dedicated a whole post to it; how to use it complete with pictures and red arrows b/c red arrows help me focus. LOL. Why? Just doing my part to spread the google reader love.

[Note to reader: Google reader’s layout has been updated since I wrote that post but the concept is still the same.]

When I first began blogging I use to add any blog but when I started getting anxious if I couldn’t read them all before the end of the day I knew it was time for some strategery [sic]. I am kinda OCD like that. My google reader must be clear by the time I go to bed. Its ok. You can say it. I am crazy. Unfortunately “mark as all read” has been used a couple times these past few months to keep my sanity.

I think its pretty easy to get in my google reader. Basically if you have a cupcake recipe that I want to make, I’ll add you. If you have alot of pictures, I’ll add you. If you make me laugh, I’ll add you. Obviously I am not a blog snob. Personally not a fan of the half feeds though. But I don’t think my standards are ridiculous. (Hear that Tastespotting?? *shaking fist*)

Hmmm… Ya think that might be the reason why I have over bazillion blogs in my reader?
